If you have a solid strong start you can create a strong painting. That is why we will be focusing on the underpainting in this workshop.

There are many ways and many benefits of using an underpainting on UART Premium Sanded Pastel Paper. The type of underpainting depends on the subject and desired end effect. In this workshop we will explore several options. Using strong, vibrant colors but not filling up the tooth of the paper is a great way to create a base upon which to add many glorious layers of pastels.

There will be a demo each morning using a different medium as an underpainting. There will also be an option to ‘paint-a-long’ from the same reference photo as Susan to really get a step-by-step approach of her technique from beginning to end. You will also have an option to work from your own photo reference as well as from a still life set up. You will receive individual instruction tailored to your specific needs, level and goals as well as a constructive critique of work done in the workshop as well as any work you bring along.

UART will provide you via email with a full list of materials before the beginning of the workshop.

One-day Sumi Painting Workshop. All levels are welcome. Bring a lunch.

Painters new to sumi-e, and those experienced in East Asian watercolor painting will be introduced and encouraged to look at the “world” in a different artistic perspective. This workshop will concentrate on learning how to see your surroundings and express your feelings in Sumi style. We will paint landscapes, (from photos you have), daily items, vegetables, breads, flowers and anything you like in your daily life in traditional and expressive Sumi style. Energetic strokes and unique, expressive composition will be emphasized. We will use sumi ink to paint on Sprinkle Gold paper, to interpret flowers in Sumi style. The fusion of western and Eastern techniques is encouraged. There will be demos, exercises, and one-on-one attention. Philosophy and brief history of Chinese and Asian art and usage of Chops will also be discussed in the workshop.

Since this is the Dog year, we will also work on painting a simplified style of a cute dog and writing Chinese characters of Dog and Blessing. You are encouraged to bring photos of your favorite dogs to the workshop that we could work on.

*For repeating students, bring your sketch screen books and we will transfer sketch to paintings.
